What is Pilates?

Pronounced Pih-lah-teez

  • It is a system of body/mind conditioning that integrates muscle use, mental focus, and specific breathing patterns. It can be performed on a mat ("mat work") or on the apparatus developed by Joseph Pilates.
  • A full body workout, Pilates is unique in its ability to strengthen muscles at the same time as stretching them. Additionally, all the supporting muscles surrounding joints being utilized are consciously employed, so joints become more stable and range of motion grows.
  • The non-impact workout is performed laying down, sitting, kneeling and eventually some standing. The technique is gentle on the body and facilitates the development of proper movement patterns.
  • The focus of Pilates is always on quality of movement - non quantity. Very few "reps" of each exercise are performed, but emphasis is placed on correct alignment, ease of movement, use of breath and form.
  • The three major pieces of equipment used in Pilates operate utilizing spring resistance. As the participant moves, muscles are working equally both in the positive and negative phases of contraction. This prevents muscle bulkiness and encourages long, lean muscle development.
